Do African Grey Parrots Scream?
I really don't know the answer to that question. In my teens I worked in various pet stores and while some of the other birds were quite loud, I never heard any of the Greys make a peep (I did get bitten by one once...that was unpleasant). I did a google search to try and answer my question, but didn't come up with much. I found a youtube video of a Grey supposedly "screaming". I had to chuckle because it sounded more like a cooing baby than a screaming bird. I guess I still don't have my answer.

I have a timneh and a congo, and they have the same loud squawk they do occasionally.
I certainly wouldn't say it's a scream, at least not compared to my macaw!
More typical vocalizations from them are microwave beeps, phone rings, farting, talking, singing, whistling etc., like in the video you posted.
Based on my experience (with my own greys and those at the rescue where I volunteer), I don't think that greys have a natural scream call. I think some can learn to mimic other screamers (macaws, cockatoos), however.
If I can ever capture the squawking on video, I'll let you know! Normally they'll do it when they want attention (and only about once a month), so hard to capture on tape!
THANK YOU for responding! I have always wondered. Yes please let me know if you ever manage to get video of it. (and the farting too hahahaha)
Ditto to what Mary said.
My own grey never did scream, but did mimic the cockatoos when they called me. The congo grey at the aviary I visit has picked up the macaw scream and uses it once in awhile, but generally she talks to herself, chirps, beeps, and makes really cool pouring water sounds. :)
So would a Grey be a good apartment bird? Nani can get loud (volume) but it is only about once a day for a few minutes, and I describe it as pretty melodious...mostly whistles, chirps, and an occasional so called scream. She is a good apartment bird.
I actually have lots of recordings of grey screaming, because my rescue bird that passed in 07 was a grey. She screamed more then any of my other birds put together, the pitch was just god awful. Her talking was wonderful, but her screaming was reminiscent of fingernails on a chalkboard.
Emily, post the recording on the forum if you can.
IMO, MOST greys would make decent apartment birds. Of course everyone is an individual, so I have to qualify by saying most :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWStsMQ8l68 is a video of my severe macaw screaming. This is what I think of as screaming, and my greys don't do anything like that.
They can occasionally get loud. When we first moved into our house, I didn't realize that the smoke detector right outside our bathroom was pretty sensitive and would go off after a steamy shower. Max really liked that noise and for a couple of months, after every shower, she would exactly mimic the smoke detector sound.
But usually it's much more pleasant sounds. I could live with my greys in an apartment. My macaw, not so much!!!
Yes, you're right. That IS screaming. :-)
